The Managing Director is a central role in overseeing BitPay B.V.'s operational, compliance, and other business functions. The ideal candidate for this role has proven leadership in regulated cryptocurrency environments, capable of ensuring operational excellence, organizational resilience, and regulatory compliance.
The Managing Director will report directly to the Management Board and work closely with executives at BitPay, Inc. to translate strategic vision into effective business outcomes. Additionally, a strong working knowledge of IT systems and digital infrastructure is important to effectively oversee IT-related functions and the performance of the IT Manager. This role will be a statutory director of BitPay B.V., participating in Management Board deliberations and decisions, and contributing to the company’s overall governance and strategic development.
Responsibilities
- Provide hands-on leadership across all business units, ensuring operational excellence and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Oversee and coordinate the organization’s daily operations, including direct management of the Head of Operations, Europe and the Chief Compliance Officer, BitPay B.V.
- Establish and maintain operational policies and internal controls.
- Support and oversee the IT function with sufficient technical understanding to ensure system integrity, cybersecurity, and digital asset infrastructure.
- Support a performance-driven culture, emphasizing accountability, transparency, and innovation.
- Represent the company externally with regulators, partners, and other key stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the executive team on business development initiatives, strategic partnerships, and long-term planning.
- Engage with colleagues on the Management Board and relevant committees on strategic direction and governance matters.
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in a senior operations or general management role within a minimum of 2 years in a regulated cryptocurrency environment.
- Proven track record of at least 5 years leading cross-functional teams and delivering measurable operational improvements, ideally in fast-paced, technology-driven organizations.
- Strong understanding of regulatory compliance requirements in the crypto space, with experience managing or partnering with compliance leadership (e.g., CCO or MLRO), with hands-on involvement in operationalizing controls and policies.
- Proven ability to scale business operations, optimize internal processes, and lead through high-growth or rapidly evolving environments.
- Familiarity with IT systems and digital infrastructure relevant to crypto businesses, with the ability to oversee technical teams and ensure system integrity.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, including experience working with regulators, partners, and executive leadership.
- Fluency in English; Dutch language skills are a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Law, or a related field, advance degree preferred.
